Got Soup?

Duck soup is the ferret equivalent of a human "power shake". It's a great source of protein and nutrition for ill, post-surgical, and elder ferrets. Also, since some medicines, such as Prednisone, must be given with food, you may offer a cube of soup before giving medicine. Or sometimes, you can get by with mixing the medicines right into the soup.

Since ferrets don't always take to new foods, the best suggestion is, give soup to your healthy ferrets once or twice a week as a treat. Ultimately, if or when your ferret really needs it, he or she will be familiar with it.

Soup may be made up in a blender, frozen in ice cube trays, and transferred to freezer bags. Soup will stay good for quite some time this way. When ready to use, put a cube or cubes into a small microwave bowl and microwave until melted. (Usually 25 or 30 seconds per cube). Stir in a little water to thin. Test temperature with your finger to make sure it isn't too hot or cold. (Ferrets seem to prefer warm soup).

To get your ferret to try that first batch, hold him or her in your arms. This way they associate the soup with love from their human. Get some soup on your finger and let them lick it off. If they refuse, try smearing a little on their mouth. Older and ill ferrets enjoy being held when they eat soup.

There are many variations of Duck soup recipes. A good, simple, basic soup is; water softened high quality ferret kibble, Gerber chicken baby food, and a small amount of Nutri-Cal or Ferretvite. Toss everything into a blender and add enough water to make it smooth and about the consistency of a thick milk shake. You can add a little more water when served to thin it.

You may also toss in a scoop of powdered Kitten Milk Replace, a dash of Ferretone, a scoop of Nupro (sold through The Ferret Store), or even a small spoonful of plain yogurt. You may use anything you think your ferret will like and will be good for them.
